Sadly, our running community has lost one of its best. Dave Cooley passed away on January 5 at the age of 91. Dave was known to many in the BRRC as a fellow runner, leader, volunteer, race director, and friend.
A member for 46 years, he was a dedicated supporter of our Club and events. When the BRRC’s traditional Maryland Marathon closed, Dave was instrumental in establishing and directing the NCR Trail Marathon in 1990. His involvement with our marathon as mentor and co-director extended for many years through 2014. He also helped the Club bring Avon Running for Women to Baltimore. He was a behind the scenes and familiar face at hundreds of BRRC races over the years, willing to share his knowledge and expertise of race directing.
As a race management professional, Dave started the Race for the Cure in Baltimore and directed it for eight years after which he became the race director for the Baltimore Marathon for the following eight years. The GBMC Father’s Day Race is one of the races in which he played a pivotal role in 1988 and is still being held today.
Dave was a respected, tireless ambassador for our Club and will be remembered for his many contributions to the BRRC.
