Athletic Performance

Tom began his running career back at Patterson High School as a hurdler on the track team. In his young adulthood, Tom progressed to running marathons, participating in the Maryland Marathon in both 1981 and 1984, finishing both under 4 hours. Throughout his 30s and 40, Tom became a fixture in BRRC races on the track, road, and trail and he often brought his sons along with him, building their life-long love of running. After running two of the early editions of the new Baltimore Marathon in his late 40s, age 50 brought a new passion: ultramarathons and trail running. His first ultras were 50Ks in the local area, like HAT 50K and Promise Land 50K before taking on 50 milers at JFK in 2008 and Stone Mill in 2013. Tom eventually completed 100 miles at Oil Creek in 2011 and Umstead and Eastern States in 2014, among others. Tom also progressed into timed loop ultras from 6 and 8 hour races, to 12 and 24 hour events, topping out at 6 days and over 300 miles at 6 Days at the Fair in 2017 at age 61. Despite Tom’s focus on ultramarathons, he remained a fixture on the local racing scene, running track, road, and trail races at every conceivable distance.

Longevity

Tom’s running career has lasted over 50 years with little break. He started as a high school hurdler before progressing onto distance running as an adult, running the Maryland Marathon in 1981 at age 25. He has continued to compete in track, road, and trail races of every conceivable distance throughout the next 44 years, continuing to the present.

Service to the Club

Since the early 2000s, Tom has actively served the club as a race volunteer, race director, serving as a board member delegate, and every officer position: Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President. He has been awarded BRRC Volunteer of the Year multiple times.

Tom’s most notable contribution to the club was to introduce training groups as one of the first coaches. He also ensured the professionalism of our training groups by ensuring that he and the other coaches earned RRCA coaching certifications and maintained CPR and First Aid certifications. Through his efforts, our club’s coaching program has increased in size and he is known as “Coach Tom” to many club members both new and longstanding. He continues to serve as a coach with the new runner/5K training group, sharing his enthusiasm, and love of running with our new runners.

Stewardship

Tom has been a great club ambassador to the greater Baltimore running community. As an early member of the local ultramarathon scene, Tom hosted several “fat ass” style ultras at Oregon Ridge and at the NCR trail. He also created and maintains the Ultra Runners Finishers List to track the participation of BRRC members and other local runners in ultrarunning events. This list is still found on the BRRC website. He also raised two sons in the club who have gone on to be lifelong runners and ambassadors for the sport, including our current club president.
