Kid’s Cross-Country Braves the Cold

McDonogh School

Race Director: Jeff Sanborn

November 9, 2003

The 17th Annual Kidd’s Cross-Country, not unlike the NCAA XC Championships or the Footlocker HS XC Championships, arrives every November holding promise for the newly crowned champions and those anticipating the starter’s pistol and the fast start to the mile and a half sprint around the McDonogh Campus. The day broke cold but still for the one hundred brave souls looking for a competitive race. 5 different age group races are staged over the morning with the veterans taking off at 9 am and then another race every 15 minutes until the 9 and under charge down the starting line a little after 10 am.

There were several competitive races down the stretch reminiscent of days past when Dave Chalmers (winner of this year’s Trail Marathon), Chris Wright (St. Joe great), ran their record times. While young Mary McAuliffe ran off with the 10 – 11, and Johnny McAuliffe was 10th in the 12 –14 boys, it was Margaret McAuliffe who won the crowd over with her charge around the track and down to the finish line. Other winners were:

12 –14  Blake Bauls and Kryston Zeiller

10 – 11 Matt Jablonski and Mary McAuliffe

9 & under Gavin McBride and Taylor Broom

We have a great time every year and are grateful for the club’s support and encouragement. Apologies to all misspellings. Writing names on numbers when the temperatures are below freezing, does not make for legibility.
Jeff Sanborn.
